It was a big surprise but a great honour to be invited to be Lady Captain of Dunmurry Golf Club. I have enjoyed my year as Vice captain and watched carefully as Liz Johnston executed her duties so efficiently, so I know I have a busy year ahead. This will be a big sporting year and in particular we have the Irish Open to look forward to. I started playing golf as a young teenager. I was a member of Belvoir. My studies, 'romance' and eventually a young family put an end to that stage of my golf career!! My husband, Ken, has been a member of Dunmurry for many years, then our sons joined and not to be out done I became a member in 1992. I was a very casual player then, but since my retirement I have joined in competitions, played on a few teams and really enjoyed the companionship of the Ladies' Section. My other passion in life is bridge. I have played this game for over 30 years and have been fortunate to have been selected to represent the Northern Ireland Ladies on several occasions. I achieved my 8th “cap” this year and am off to play in the home internationals in Wales in April. If only my golf was as good as my bridge!! My chosen charity to support this year is Alzheimer's Society. In particular, the focus on the work done by carers in our local area. My very active committee are planning a few events for the incoming season and we are hoping for a lot of support. I wish our new Captain, Tom, and new President, Colin, a very happy and fulfilling term in office. Hopefully, together we will be good ambassadors for Dunmurry and provide support and encouragement for all our representative teams. Norma Irwin
