RNLI CHARITY DAY : FRIDAY 7th JUNE 18 visitors joined 48 Dunmurry ladies for the RNLI charity day. The weather was perfect and all enjoyed the playing conditions. The visitor's prize went to Wendy Reid from Malone with 35 points - Daphne Bailie from Lisburn was runner up in this section with 32 points. The highest placed Dunmurry lady was Jane Fleming with 37 points as had the second placed, Laura Cathcart. Lady Captain presented the prizes to the winners. She then presented a cheque of £417.25 to June Barker, representing the RNLI. June described some of the outstanding work carried out by the RNLI volunteers. There is no government funding, so the donation from Dunmurry was very welcome. No call for help is ignored and last year the Bangor branch received 53 call outs and 53 rescues were recorded. The call outs for help can vary greatly, and sailors, fishermen, individuals and animals have all benefited from the unstinting dedication of the RNLI volunteers. |

LADY CAPTAIN'S SHOTGUN, BUFFET AND RULES OF GOLF. Thirty six very brave ladies braved the elements of strong winds and driving showers to compete in the annual Lady Captain's Shotgun competition on Friday 26th April. Despite the adverse weather conditions the winning team of Joyce Hughes, Ellen Bennett and Carol Redpath came home with a nice card and 69 points, followed by Julia Trinder, Norine Smyth and Jane Fleming with 64 points. After a hot tasty buffet selection, members who played began slowly to warm up. The prizes were then presented by last year's winners. Cathy McKay, a rules official from ILGU then gave an informative, and at times a humorous talk on the rules of golf. She was very willing to take questions from the floor and so cleared up some points which members had had some queries with when playing. She highlighted some problem areas, such as ball in bunkers, dropping areas and the differences between match play rules and normal competitions. She emphasised the importance of following the rules until a ball is finally lifted out of the hole. A very helpful talk.
In finishing off the evening the Lady Captain thanked Cathy for her attention to detail in preparing the talk and again commended the ladies who persevered and played the 18 holes, with the hope that the weather could only improve for the remainder of the season. |

Ria – diance presented by Rea McMillan on Thursday 11th April Almost 90 ladies and friends attended the health and beauty evening on Thursday 11th April. The evening started off with the Lady Captain welcoming members and visitors to the demonstration. She had visited the N.I. Leukaemia Research Unit in the City Hospital and was impressed by the level of research taking place there and the donations the unit was receiving to further research. The evening continued with Rea demonstrating the benefits of using the beauty products by Lisearle, available on the internet with some alternatives available from Boots. One willing volunteer had a personal facial, making some of us quite envious. The amount of beauty products available was a revelation. Rea went on with some homely advice on overall body care and stressed the importance of good posture as a starting point. The audience was amazed at her energy as she went through her daily exercise routine. The ballot followed and raised a very generous total of £442 which will be donated to Lady Captain’s chosen charity this year, the N.I. Leukaemia Research Unit. Tea/coffee and a lovely selection of sandwiches, prepared by the restaurant staff ended off the evening. |
