TOM TRIUMPHS IN JUBILEE CUP

On a day of fine scoring in windy conditions, Tom Snoddon sneaked victory in the Jubilee Cup, by the narrowest of margins, last Saturday at Dunmurry Golf Club.

Tom was one of three golfers to shoot 42 points on the day, sharing the score with William Meehan and Andrew Cochrane, but edged both on count back with a better back nine.

The ten-handicapper had a great start to his round, parring the first three holes, but after a bogey at the fourth, a double bogey at six and a further bogey at the eighth, Tom reached the turn with only 19 points.

A bogey at the tenth did little for his score but a birdie at the eleventh got him going and three pars followed. A bogey at fifteen slowed his pace but pars at the next two holes restored his confidence and a birdie at the home hole saw him come home in 23 points for his total of 42.

Twelve-handicapper, William, mixed four pars with three bogeys going out, and a birdie at the eighth helped off set a double bogey at six, allowing him to turn in 20 points. A strong back nine of two over par, gave William 22 points coming in and helped secure second place.

Third place went to Andrew (7) who made it to the turn at level par and 22 points, aided by a birdie at the first. His back nine began strongly and thanks to a birdie at fourteen, was one under par with four holes remaining. Bogeys at Andrew’s next two holes set him back but he recovered to par in for 20 points for his 42 total.

Paul Watters (11) took fourth thanks to a superb birdie – birdie finish to give him 41 points, just edging George Redpath (14), who had 40 points, who rued not scoring at the fifteenth hole.

Best Gross went to Graeme Dickson (1) who shot a level par 70 to beat his brother Michael (4) by one shot. Graeme parred his first nine holes, before birdies at the tenth and fourteenth took him to two under par. But after bogeys at the fifteenth and sixteenth, he had to settle for level.

Michael began slowly and after bogeys at two, three and nine, was three over on his round. Birdies at twelve and thirteen got him back to one over, parring in for a fine back nine of 33 (2 under par) to give 71.

DUNMURRY SAFELY THROUGH IN B & D TROPHY.

Defending champions Dunmurry are through to the quarter finals of the B&D Trophy after a comfortable win against Downpatrick. After winning the home leg five matches to two, the side made their way to Downpatrick looking for the three matches they needed to progress.

Wins for Noel Murray, Darren Crowe and Stephen Crowe got them over the line and Patrick McGlone was also ahead when the remaining matches were called in. They now face neighbours Malone in the last eight.

Meanwhile there was a mixture of success and failure for Dunmurry’s Juvenile Section last weekend.

In the Fred Daly Plate they were beaten by a good Fortwilliam side eight matches to six, despite winning their home leg five to two.

On the plus side they won the Sargaison Shield for the first time since 1986 after competing at Balmoral Golf Club.

The competition is designed for a team of five players with handicaps of twelve or over, the four best counting for the score.

Dunmurry set their score early in difficult conditions and expected to be passed as the weather continued to improve as the day went on. Their luck was in and they were delighted to discover they had been victorious.

Congratulations to the team.

SENIOR CUP SQUAD FALL TO MOYOLA.

Dunmurry’s Senior Cup squad were in action last weekend, at the regional final at the Hilton.

They faced Fortwilliam in their first match, and comfortably ran out winners, with Stephen Crowe, Darren Crowe and Noel Murray winning the top three matches.

Andrew Pigott was also up and Glenn McAuley was all square when the tie finished.

In the afternoon they faced an equally talented Moyola Park side, and it proved to be a tight affair, eventually decided on the final hole.

Stephen Crowe lost a very tight match on the last, to fellow- beaten Irish Close semi-finalist, Luke Lennox, but Darren Crowe came through his match to restore parity and Noel Murray beat Irish Boy International, Chris Selfridge to give the Dunmurry men the edge.

Glenn McAuley went down to Ulster player, Paul O’Kane to again, level the tie.

It was left to Andrew Pigott who’s second shot to the home hole plugged in a bunker and his opponent took full advantage to win both the match and the tie.

The team were naturally disappointed to get so close, but were equally proud of their achievements.

CAPTAIN’S DAY STUNNER FOR IAN.

Thirty-two years after joining Dunmurry Golf Club, Ian Berry had the best day of his golfing career, after capturing Club Captain, John Bennett’s Prize, with a stunning round of 46 points!

Eleven-handicapper, Ian, parred the first four holes, to get his round off to the perfect start. Two bogeys followed at five and six, but after a par at seven, disaster struck as Ian eventually tapped in for a triple bogey seven.

At the ninth, however, Ian produced the shot of the day, holing his nine-iron, second shot for an eagle two! It garnered him five much needed points, giving 21 points for his outward half. More importantly, it set the tone for the remainder of his round.

After three more pars, Ian birdied the par five thirteenth, and, after further pars at the next four holes, he produced a stunning approach to the final hole for another birdie, giving him a remarkable 25 points home for an unassailable total of 46 points!

Over 250 golfers took part on the day and enjoyed the glorious sunshine the Captain had promised to deliver. As well as Ian’s superb score, many others found their game in the perfect conditions.

Graeme Dickson (1) took the prize for the Best Gross, with his score of two under par, 68. Graeme had birdies at the fourth and ninth going out, with one blemish at the seventh, were he made a bogey four, making the turn in one under the card. His back nine was equally as steady, eight straight pars before a birdie at the last, for a two under total.

Geoff Hill (19) began his round with a birdie three, and after pars at the second, fifth and seventh, had 24 points for an excellent front nine. Double bogeys at the tenth and thirteenth set him back, but he rallied, with a birdie at the fourteenth, and a par at eighteen gave him 19 points coming home, and a total of 43, giving him second spot behind Ian.

Mark Shepherd (6) had six birdies in his round of 41 points to clinch third place on count-back. Mark birdied the first, fourth, tenth, thirteenth, fourteenth and sixteenth for a one over par 71.

Jonathan McDowell (8) had 40 points to take the low handicap section, Tom Snodden (11) took the 11 – 18 section with 41 points, after being edged out of the top prizes, and Roy Wassan (27) won the high section with 38 points.

Darryl Flannagan (6) won the Council prize with 37 points and Tony Cassidy (19) won the Past Captain’s prize with 36.

Other prizes given out at that evening’s prize presentation included the prize on offer for the 5/6 day members. Malachy Flynn had 42 points to take the prize.

Margaret Marks had 44 points to win top prize in the Ladies section with Vinie Briggs taking second on 41 points and Julia Trinder third on 40 points.

The Juvenile prizes were won by Niall Brown who had 41 points and Stephen Gracey who had a gross 71.

There was also a Hole-in-one at the sixteenth by Nigel Abernethy.

Junior Cup Team progress to Second Round.

Dunmurry’s Junior Cup Team, led by Roy Donnan, beat a strong Tandragee side, three matches to two, to move into the second round of the competition.

Colin Power got the side off to a winning start by clinching a vital win on the home hole.

Don Weekes made it two from two after his win, but after Conor Graham and Craig Fleming both lost, the tie was in the balance. It was left to seventeen-year-old Ryan Murray to produce a fine 3 & 1 victory to see the side home.

The team now travel to Knock to play Scrabo in the next round.

Dunmurry Retain Belfast and District Trophy

Golfers from Dunmurry retained this prestigious senior trophy thanks to a nail biting win over Ballyclare on Sunday. This magnificent cup was inaugurated in 1903, two years before Dunmurry Golf Club was formed and had been keenly contested by many of the top amateur golfers in Ulster ever since. Previous individual names on the trophy include Norman Drew, Gareth McGimpsey and Rory McIlroy. Seven players play singles matches off scratch with home and away legs. The handicaps of the seven Dunmurry players ranged from plus two to two. The first round commenced in May and a total of 34 Clubs from the Greater Belfast area entered. Several teams were seeded by virtue of good performances last year so Dunmurry played their first match against Bangor who had defeated Tandragee in the previous round. Victories both home and away led to a fourth round encounter with Knock who had beaten Ardglass and were winners in 2006. Matches between these two teams have always proved to be tense encounters and so it proved this year, Dunmurry running out as winners by virtue of a Darren Crowe birdie at the first tie hole. In the semi final Dunmurry played close neighbours Belvoir Park who had disposed of Kirkistown Castle and Donaghadee in their last rounds. The home leg saw Dunmurry win by a 4 ½ to 2 ½ margin meaning that three matches were required at Belvoir. These were duly earned with wins in horrendous conditions from Noel Murray, Stephen and Darren Crowe.  The final matched Dunmurry against Ballyclare, who had not won this prestigious trophy before but had disposed on quality teams in Malone, Carnalea, Lurgan and Banbridge on their way to the final.

The home leg at Dunmurry resulted in a 6 to 1 win for Dunmurry and laid the foundation for the second leg. In a thrilling final played in bright sunshine at Ballyclare spectators were treated to a golfing exhibition. In the first match Noel Murray played Simon McConnell and found himself two down after nine holes despite being only one over par. Steady play over the next few holes on tricky greens meant that Noel was one up after the par 3 15th hole, a birdie at the 418 yard par 4 16th moved him to 2 holes up. At the par 5 17th an uphill 483 yard par 5 Noel drained an 8 foot putt for birdie to close out the match. At that stage Paddy McGlone and Michael Dickson had been beaten so Dunmurry still needed half a match from the four remaining matches on the course. Darren Crowe was playing Robert Forsythe and had not been ahead throughout his match. He was one down playing the 17th hole but secured a vital success courtesy of an exquisite third shot from just off the green. The match was all square on the 18th but Darren’s iron off the tee found trees and he had to play out. Robert hit a second shot long and left but miraculously chipped close from under a tree. Darren’s putt shaved the hole but when his opponent missed his putt the decisive half was secured. At that stage both Glen McAuley and Stephen Crowe were 2 down but Graeme Dickson was one hole to the good. Stephen had to contend with a hole in one from his opponent George Armstrong at the 175 yard par 3 eleventh hole. These matches were called in and Dunmurry retained the trophy, the first side to do so for twenty years.

Team Captain Tony Cassidy was fulsome in his praise for his young team who had practiced earnestly since January. “It is a wonderful achievement for the panel of players who showed tremendous fighting spirit throughout the competition, they are a credit to themselves, Dunmurry Golf Club and a vindication of the time and effort spent encouraging Juvenile golfers in our Club”. He mentioned Ian Moore and Andrew Pigott who had played with distinction in earlier rounds and had contributed significantly to the team’s success. He thanked his assistant Stephen Crowe for all his help throughout the campaign. Tony accepted the Cup from Golfing Union of Ireland Official David McNeill and handed it over to Club Captain Tony McVeigh for display in the trophy cabinet. Tony said “I hope this will be the catalyst to gain further silverware for a group of exceptionally talented individuals who have come together as a team to rival any Club in Ireland”
